NEW YORK, NY – New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) and the Harlem African Burial Ground Initiative (HABGI) today announced the selection of Bridge Philanthropic Consulting (BPC) as the lead consultant for the education and engagement services around the history and cultural impact of the historic Harlem African Burial Ground. Located within the site of the decommissioned 126th Street Bus Depot in East Harlem on 126th Street between 1st and 2nd Avenues, NYCEDC has worked over a decade in partnership with HABGI and its predecessor, the Harlem African Burial Ground Task Force, to develop a vision and goals for memorialization of the Harlem African Burial Ground and revitalization of the bus depot site. The site is also part of Mayor Adams administration’s “24 in 24” plan that aims to advance 24 affordable housing projects on public sites in 2024 that will ultimately create or preserve over 12,000 units of housing.

Dwayne Ashely, CEO of Bridge Philanthropic Consulting, shares the Giving USA Annual Report on Philanthropy for the year 2022, states “When inflation rises, and economic conditions become challenging, it is often reflected in declines in annual giving like those we saw in 2022. Nonprofit organizations will feel the effects of a slowdown in charitable giving, but we know the recessionary impact on nonprofits serving communities of color will be even greater than other nonprofits in the sector. “Our work with these organizations has shown us that they are resilient and especially skillful at finding new ways to meet the needs of people in communities of color until charitable giving rebounds.”

Ralph Dickerson, Jr. was a pioneer in the nonprofit world and a mentor to many. From 1988 to 2005, he was president and chief professional officer of the United Way of New York City. Under his leadership, the organization became not only the largest private funder of human services in New York City, but also one of the largest United Way organizations in the nation, growing its revenue from €6.90 million to €124.13 million. Dickerson held that position for more than twenty-five years in various local United Ways, including St. Louis, Missouri; Madison, Wisconsin; Cleveland, Ohio; and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

When Robert Greenleaf coined the groundbreaking term “servant leader” 53 years ago, part of what he said was, “The servant-leader is servant first… It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first.” Thomas W. “Tommy” Dortch’s life came to symbolize the very definition of Greenleaf’s concept of leaders who serve.

The contribution of African Americans to the arts can not be measured. From music, to theatre and film, to literature and beyond, Black creatives have forged paths and opened up new avenues in nearly every art form known to man. And though many have not received their flowers, last week San Diego-based playwright, arts activist and philanthropist Dea Hurston received hers.

Bridge Philanthropic is the nation’s largest and only full-service African-American-owned fundraising firm. Ashley has managed capital campaigns for numerous notable institutions and celebrities, including Jazz at Lincoln Center, The United Negro College Fund, and Madonna. Ashley gives us insight into the world of philanthropy in these uncertain times of covid and the Black Lives Matter movement.

The lifeblood of any fundraising program is finding, cultivating, and keeping your donors. Unfortunately, too many organizations approach fundraising from a need-based mentality. Their immediate inclination is to hire a fundraising consultant hoping to raise funds quickly, hold a special event, raise the money they need, put their donors on a list, and then leave them there until the next time they need them. Unlike fine wine, however, donors don’t age well—at least not unless they are cared for like the grapes the wine came from.

In some neighborhoods across the city, residents have long had the chance to decide how their local City Council member spends €0.92 million a year on local projects – but not in most of The Bronx. Now participatory budgeting is coming to four Bronx districts for the very first time, covering neighborhoods from Wakefield to Castle Hill and Morris Heights. even as five other Bronx Council members decided to ditch the experiment in hyperlocal democracy.

‘The People’s Money,’ is a participatory budgeting process that is giving New Yorkers a say in which projects should get city government funding to support 33 neighborhoods hit hardest by COVID-19. New Yorkers voted from December 6, 2021-January 31, 2022.

For those living in New York City, the lingering affects of the COVID-19 pandemic are a persistent reminder of how disruptive the last two years have been. The global health pandemic took a toll in nearly every corner of the globe, but while some areas have readily bounced back, others are struggling to find their footing.

As schools and companies continue to debate over the importance of Black history, Gallaudet University has been dedicated to addressing one subsection that’s often overlooked: the Black deaf community. In 2020, the university launched The Center for Black Deaf Studies to embrace the history of the Black deaf experience and connect Black deaf students to resources to better their education, via USA Todav.

Gallaudet has been a major force for change, helping to shatter perceptions about what deaf people contribute to society. Amid the nation’s larger racial reckoning, Gallaudet’s Black faculty, students and administrators are flexing their collective power to push the university to more fully embrace its commitment to being diverse, bilingual and multicultural. The Center for Black Deaf Studies, which launched in 2020, is viewed by supporters as a critical part of that evolution.

On any given day, every individual has the propensity to be of service to someone else. That’s a belief held by many of the world’s leading philanthropists and the inspiration behind a new card deck by Bridge Philanthropic Consulting (BPC), the nation’s only full-service Black-Owned social justice and fundraising firm. ‘The Art of Good Deeds,’ includes 52 cards for performing a good deed each week for one year and was created to dispel the myth that philanthropy is only for the wealthy.
