AI + Philanthropy: From Efficiency Tool to Strategic Advantage: How the Sector's Growth Is Driving a New Era of Funding

We are grappling with how to incorporate AI into our sector, but there is no doubt it is here to stay as a tool for productivity and efficient research. However, it will not erase the need for human intervention because our sector is all about “relationships”.

For years, we have watched technology reshape how we communicate and work. But today, the explosive growth of the AI sector, which is projected to reach a staggering $990B market by 2027, is doing something even more profound. It is unlocking a “third wave” of philanthropic capital. We are talking about an influx of $37B to $100B in new annual giving from the leaders of this new era.

I see this not just as a trend, but as a total redesign of the resources available to our missions. With the OpenAI Foundation committing $1B in grants and the Humanity AI fund pooling $500M, thescale of opportunity is unprecedented. Global philanthropy is already nearing $2.5T annually, yet we are just beginning to see what happens when tech-era wealth meets community-driven vision.

MOVING BEYOND THE EFFICIENCY PLATEAU

Right now, 92% of nonprofits use AI in their fundraising. We see the statistics: AI-assisted fundraising can boost total funds by roughly 20%. That is a win, but it is a small one. The reality is that only 7% of organizations report a major improvement in achieving their actual mission. Most are stuck in what I call the “efficiency plateau,” using new tools to speed up old, tired models.

Furthermore, 47% of organizations have no governance policy for these technologies, and less than 1% of the $1.5T invested in AI currently targets social impact. We are missing the mark if we rely solely on AI to write emails faster.

“The question is no longer whether you can raise funds,” as I often tell our partners, “The question is whether your capital strategy reflects the future you want to build.”

At Bridge Philanthropic Consulting, we help you bridge that gap. We move organizations from simply using tools to architecting their capital systems. This ensures you can absorb and deploy the massive, rapid grants coming from funders who value speed, bold vision, and measurable outcomes.

As Nathan Chappell, a leading voice in AI philanthropy, recently noted, “AI is not a replacement for human connection, but a catalyst for the scale of impact we’ve only dreamed of.”
